Discussions are on to finalise the location to house the headquarters of the South Coast Railway Zone (SCoR). As of now, two options are being discussed. The first option being considered is Wireless Colony, which is located around 500 metres from Vizag railway station, which already has a land parcel of 20 acres.
The second option being weighed is Mudasarlova, which is around 14 kilometres from the station. Railways has sufficient land in both locations. However, in case Mudasarlova gets the nod, it might have to wait for clearance of some files from the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC). A senior railway official said railways has around 52.22 acres of land in Mudasarlova.
“GVMC had given us the land in lieu of the land the railways had to forego for the widening of the city’s thoroughfares. An agreement for transfer of land was signed on January 12, 2016. However, the change in ownership in favour of railways is yet to reflect on the revenue records. The matter is being pursued,” said the official.
Of the 52.22 acres, a corner portion of nearly 13 acres is stuck in litigation, the official said, who added that the civic body is working on a resolution. He further said that the advantage of having the SCoR headquarters at Wireless Colony is that it is only 1km from the railway station. On the other hand, the advantage with Mudasarlova is that it is a lush green area with little pollution.
“If SCoR adopts the same principle as ECoR, which is located some 8 kilometres away from Bhubaneswar railway station, then Mudasarlova could be the ideal location for SCoR headquarters,” added the official. The only problem with having the headquarters in Mudasarlova is that it might be inconvenient for the staff to travel there from the city. A final call on the issue is likely to be taken in the first week of April.
