The South Central Railway (SCR) has transported 19.2 lakh litres of milk to Delhi during the current lockdown until Saturday last week. The essential item is being carried through a special freight train named ‘Doodh Duronto’.
SCR public relations officer Pradeep Kumar said that a total of eight ‘Doodh Duronto’ trains have been sent to Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station since March 26. “A total of eight trains have transported to milk to Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station so far, including one trip last Saturday.
Each train has a capacity of carrying 2.4 lakh litres of milk and total 19.2 lakh litres of milk is supplied to the national capital during the current lockdown,” he said. SCR authorities said that transportation of milk through ‘Doodh Duronto’ will be undertaken on every alternative day in future.
“The milk carrying train had first started its journey on March 26, followed by April 3, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18. Now, the frequency will be increased to every alternate day. Along with these trains, we are also sending mangoes and musk melons as per the availability,” Kumar said.
SCR authorities said that the zone was committed to continuous effort to ensure uninterrupted supply of essential commodities during the current nationwide lockdown aimed at containing the spread of Covid-19. The SCR has loaded a total of over 160 freight trains containing grains weighing over 4.38 lakh tonne and have transported the same to different parts of the country during the current week.
