The postal department joined hands with Central Railways Zone to start parcel services within Maharashtra from yesterday (May 15). The first and last mile of the journey will be covered by India Post, and transportation between the station of origin and destination will be by train.
This collaboration will allow customers to send consignments at economical rates. The India Post Railway Parcel Service will be available between Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur at first, and will be extended to other stations later.
The postal department will pick up the consignments from the customer and deliver it to the consignee, through special parcel trains operated by Central Railway and Postal Mail Motor Service. As a trial run, a consignment picked up from Hingana, Nagpur on May 9 reached its destination in Mumbai on May 10.
India Post issued a press release that said customers were finding it difficult to transport large consignments, and keeping in mind the special trains being operated, “it is decided to synergise the capabilities of India Post and Indian Railways”.
In current situation of Covid-19 lockdown, Speed Post service is being widely used by a large number of public for sending their parcels. However, for consignments in heavy weight slabs, the customers find it difficult to transport these items to the post offices for booking.
