According to the proposal for running private trains there will be two trains to Delhi and one to Nagpur from Chandigarh in 2023. The trains to Delhi will run at 160 kmph covering the journey in three hours, the proposal said. Another benefit will be the direct connectivity to Nagpur. At the moment, two trains halt at Nagpur but there is no direct train on the route.
According to the proposed time-table, the train from Chandigarh to Delhi will ply daily. From Chandigarh to Nagpur, the travel time will be 21.25 hours and from Nagpur to Chandigarh 19.40 hours. G M Singh, divisional railway manager, Ambala, said the schedule has been shared with the division.
He said a maintenance depot will be set up at the Chandigarh railway station by private players. Sources in the railways said a proposal for the depot on 2 acres of land on Panchkula side of the railway station was sent to the railway board for final nod.
Three lines will be set up, where trains which ply on cluster 5, which is Amritsar, Bathinda, Jammu Tawi and Chandigarh of private players, will be maintained at the depot. The DRM said a proposal is for recycling at the railway station is also in the pipeline as there is a washing line. The DRM said that they have sent a proposal of five trains to Jammu and Amritsar that will halt at Mohali railway station to the railway board for approval. This will increase the frequency at the station.
