The ministry of railways has instructed the Trichy Railway division to conduct final location surveys (FLS) for laying a second line along the 96km stretch of Thanjavur and Karaikal section via Tiruvarur at an estimation of 1.9 crore.
In a to the general manager of Southern Railway, the ministry has instructed the zone to carry out FLS for the execution of doubling, tripling and quadrupling projects on the Tambaram – Chengalpattu (fourth line), Jolarpettai-Coimbatore (third and fourth lines), Coimbatore – Shoranur (third and fourth lines), Arakkonam – Renigunta (third and fourth lines) and Thanjavur Junction – Tiruvarur Junction – Karaikal (doubling).
Railways also allotted 11.5 crore overall to carry out the FLS, sources said.
The Nagore-Nagapattinam Rail Users Association has welcomed the notification to execute the doubling work of the railway line, as it would result in the smooth operation of freight and passenger trains.
Since the required additional land was available with the railways, the project can be done without going for land acquisition, secretary of the association A Sithiq said.
“Express trains to Chennai, Ernakulam and Bengaluru are being operated from Karaikal. However, both the express trains and passenger trains are being halted at various railway stations due to the frequent movement of freight trains from Karaikal port along the single-line section. Once the section is doubled, the daily ordeal of passengers would also be solved,” said the association president, S Mohan.
